The Lord of Slangenburg

Frederik Johan van Baer van Slangenburg (* July 27, 1645 ; † December 15, 1713 ) was a Dutch officer in the service of William of Orange .

Career

Van Baer was an avowed Catholic, which made a career in government impossible for him. A military career was therefore the most obvious alternative. Despite the obstacles his faith put in his way, he had a brilliant career in the Dutch army. So he fought in the Palatinate as well as in the Spanish War of Succession . In 1675 he was a colonel in command of one of the Dutch-Scottish regiments. In 1683 he was promoted to major general, in 1692 to lieutenant general and finally to general in 1704 . In the Battle of Walcourt in 1689 he commanded troops; in the battle of Ekeren in 1703 he saved many troops from a hopeless battle.

Relations between van Baer and the Duke of Marlborough were not particularly good, which in 1705 led to van Baer's dismissal and his replacement by Heinrich von Nassau-Ouwerkerk , whose personal relations with Marlborough were far better.

Van Baer rebuilt his headquarters, Slangenburg Castle near Doetinchem , into a handsome castle that corresponded to its status. His wife was immortalized in various paintings by Gerard Hoet .

family

He was the son of Herman van Baer van Slangenburg (1610–1653) and Catharina van Voorst (1620–1678). In 1665 he married Dorothea Petronella van Steenbergen, who died that same year. Frederik did not marry again.
