Freedom Fields is a 2018 documentary directed by Naziha Arebi about the Libyan women's national soccer team .
action
The film follows the lives of three members of the Libyan women's national soccer team: the captain Fadwa el-Bahi, the goalkeeper Halima and Naama, who fled to Tripoli from the city of Tawurga , which was destroyed during the civil war . In the first section in 2012, women have high hopes that the revolution will bring them democracy and equality. In the second section, which takes place in 2014, fear and confusion prevail over the advance of ISIS . In the third section in 2016, the protagonists transform their disappointment about the failure of the revolution into the will to continue their struggle for equality and acceptance.
production
The director Naziha Arebi grew up as the daughter of Libyan parents in Great Britain and visited Libya for the first time in 2010. Together with Huda Abuzeid, she founded the film production company HuNa Productions in 2012 , which aims to promote Libyan film talent and productions. Because the owners are women, they have access to areas in the sexually segregated Libyan society that are normally closed to men. Freedom Fields is her first film, screened at the Joburg Film Festival in Johannesburg and the London Film Festival , and nominated for prizes at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival 2019 and the Stockholm Film Festival 2018.
