Freeman Island is a small island that belongs to the group of San Juan Islands in Washington state . Its eastern neighbor is Orcas Island .
The island was named after Charles Wilkes during the so-called Wilkes Expedition from 1838 to 1842 in honor of JD Freeman, the sailmaker of the expedition, originally in the spelling Freeman's Island .
Freeman Island is across from the YMCA Camp Orkila and is a popular destination for campers.
