history

A bathing establishment in the Zwickauer Mulde had existed in Penig since 1874 . It consisted of three sections marked with iron barrels. The bath was destroyed by a flood event on July 10, 1886. As the river became increasingly polluted, the city administration suggested building an outdoor swimming pool. For this purpose, the city of Penig acquired a plot of land on the Zwickauer Mulde in 1928. Construction began on April 10, 1929. With construction, 2500 cubic meters of earth were excavated. The opening took place on August 4, 1929. At that time there was already a 50 m pool with a width of 13 m. There was also a 10 m high diving tower with diving boards 3 and 5 m high, as well as diving platforms 5 and 10 m high. The bathroom was also equipped with 20 changing rooms.

In the summer of 1945 the bath was closed for some time because the American occupation soldiers wanted to bathe undisturbed. In 1953, the Saxon swimmers and art and high diver championships took place in the Penig outdoor pool. In 1971 a new water treatment plant was built. The pool was used for events as part of the 750th anniversary celebrations in Penig in 1977. It was u. a. an open-air stage with around 1200 seats was built, which was also used for summer film festivals and concerts after the celebration. So on July 9, 1983 the Puhdys and on May 25, 1984 Karat each gave a concert in the outdoor pool. In 1978 the diving platform was dismantled for safety reasons. Measurements showed that the jump pit was too short.
