The building cooperative Freie Scholle is a housing cooperative in the Berlin district of Tegel .

history

The Freie Scholle was founded in 1895 by Gustav Lilienthal , the brother of the famous aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal , far from the gates of Berlin on the open ground on the Tegeler Fliess near the Steinberg Park. The building contractors built two-family houses on their own in today's Egidystraße, large parts of which are still there today. In 1920 the architect Bruno Taut expanded the estate to include the Schollenhof (formerly: Lilienthalhof). After the Second World War , the houses destroyed in the war on Egidystraße were replaced by multi-family houses as part of social housing. In addition, from the 1960s onwards, the cooperative built further settlements in Lübars , Alt-Wittenau (Alt-Wittenau and Rosentreterpromenade), in 1995 on Waidmannsluster Damm at the corner of Ziekowstrasse and in 2019 the "Lilienthals Hofgarten" settlement on Waidmannsluster Damm in Waidmannslust , adjacent to their settlement in Tegel .

Large parts of the original settlement Freie Scholle available as of buildings under monument protection .

After the Second World War , the houses were plastered and are therefore gray. Some houses on Egidystraße were painted yellow as part of the monument protection. The houses of the 1920s, on the other hand, are colored and, according to Bruno Taut's ideas, have different colors depending on the incidence of light.

After the estate was listed as a historical monument in 1988, the board of directors of the Freie Scholle has set itself the task of gradually redesigning the streets in their original style. The current board members are Lidija Arndt and Hans-Jürgen Hube.

The Freie Scholle is characterized by a calm, contemplative atmosphere, which is also achieved through the special living style. All buildings are flat and mostly consist of only two floors. Since the original settlement of Freie Scholle is framed by Steinbergpark and Fliessal, it is also known as "The settlement in the countryside" in the parlance of North Berliners.

Freie Scholle currently has over 5,100 members, although it only has approx. Owns 1,500 apartments. The special thing about the cooperative is the advisory board, which consists of around 30 people, a voluntary body that has set itself the goal of promoting good neighborly relations among Schollans through various activities and at the same time improving the quality of the living environment.

Row of houses in the steep path

The advisory board members organize various events, the most famous of which is the annual Schollen Festival (always at the end of August or beginning of September), but also events for young and old. In 2004, the Advisory Board was awarded the Reinickendorf district's Silbertaler for its voluntary work.

Once a year the Schollans are invited to an information evening in their settlement in order to find out the latest news from their cooperative from both the advisory board and the board of directors.

The cooperative has two logos: A house with a red roof in a green circle is the founding logo, which lasted until 1995. The current logo shows two houses hugging each other on a green lawn. This logo reflects the motto: "Live together".

The cooperative maintains cooperations with the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) with an old people's and a daycare center , the Paul Löbe High School (internships, garage door art) and the Nature Conservation Association Germany (NABU).

Due to the cooperative law, the word “non-profit” had to be dropped from the name on July 1, 2011. According to the statutes, the building cooperative continues to pursue non-profit status.
