The Freie Schule Leipzig is a state-approved replacement school in Leipzig .

It was founded on 30 August 1990 and is therefore the only one still in the GDR was founded alternative school and one of the oldest democratic schools in Germany. The school is a member of the Federal Association of Independent Alternative Schools (BFAS) and the European Democratic Education Community (EUDEC).

history

The school was founded in 1990 shortly before the reunification . Since there was no separation between elementary and secondary schools in the GDR, the permit was valid from the beginning up to and including the 10th grade. In 1996 the construction of the secondary school began. The building used was too small to run all ten classes. Therefore, the secondary school was established in a different location. Due to this spatial separation, the elementary school and the secondary level developed independently. As a result, the locations were also formally legally separated in 2005 and the association was split up. In 2007, the then Saxon Education Agency prohibited the operation of the middle school. The administrative court in Leipzig rejected the urgent application filed against it. The Saxon Higher Administrative Court in Bautzen revised this decision and approved the operation of the middle school.

In 2008 the Free School Leipzig organized the first European Democratic Education Conference together with the University of Leipzig and the Sudbury School Halle-Leipzig eV .

In 2009 the school moved to its current location in Leipzig-Grünau . The renovation of the school building began in 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2020.

particularities

Freedom of study

Each student can freely dispose of his or her time at the school. He can decide for himself what, when, how and with whom to learn. There is no one who sets a curriculum.

Co-determination

The large school assembly , which takes place twice a week, decides on all matters relating to school life (e.g. rules). Each student and companion has one vote in the meeting.
