The term free play has two main meanings. On the one hand it can refer to the degree of regulation of a game , on the other hand to its license status .

Rules free games

The Children's often found without explicit rules of the game and will be therefore called free play. In education , the importance of this behavior is emphasized by Rebeca Wild or in the concept of free play . Games for teenagers and adults usually have well-defined rules. However, there are also free games, such as free role-playing games .

Royalty free games

With regard to the license of games, the term “free play” is used inconsistently. This can mean traditional games for which there was never a copyright or for which this has expired, such as chess or skat . In addition, modern games that are explicitly under a free license or are free of charge are also referred to as "free play".
