Sculpture freedom fighter

The sculpture Freedom Fighters in Bremen - Mitte is included in the list of monuments and statues of the city of Bremen .

The bronze sculpture on a concrete base was made by the Berlin artist Fritz Cremer . It was erected in 1984 in memory of Mildred Harnack and Harro Schulze-Boysen at the Wilhelm-Wagenfeld-Haus in the Bremen Wallanlagen . Cremer, according to the education authority, “created the sculpture as early as 1947. He dedicated it to his executed friends and the fighters with a base inscription:“ I dedicate this figure to my executed friends of the Schulze-Boysen-Harnack group as well as Walter Husemann, Elisabeth and Kurt Schumacher 'Erika von Brockdorff and Willy Schürmann'. “In 1983 Cremer was awarded the Bremen Sculpture Prize. He gave Bremen a replica of his work of art that is in Berlin.

From Cremer comes u. a. the Buchenwald memorial (1958), the memorial for the Mauthausen concentration camp (1967) and the group of figures for the Ravensbrück concentration camp (1965).

Mildred Harnack (1902–1943, literary scholar) and Harro Schulze-Boysen (1909–1942, publicist and officer in the Air Force) were resistance fighters against National Socialism who also worked in the so-called Red Chapel for the Soviet intelligence service NKGB . The aforementioned Walter Husemann (1909–1943, editor), Elisabeth Schumacher (1904–1942, graphic artist), Kurt Schumacher (1905–1942, sculptor), Erika Countess von Brockdorff (1911–1943, office worker) and Willy Schürmann (1900–1942) 1943, actor) were with many others companions in the resistance; all were executed.
