The Freiherr-vom-Stein-Platz (originally Steinplatz ) is situated on the stone road and the Munster Road in the southern entrance of the borough Downtown North (North city). It was a completely new building and one of the first places and economic secondary centers outside the historic city walls of Dortmund . Between Steinplatz and the recreation and amusement park Fredenbaum , the first tram line ( horse-drawn tram ) in Dortmund was opened on June 1, 1881 as the forerunner of the tram electrified in 1894. In particular, due to its proximity to the main train station and the slaughterhouse and cattle market that opened in 1885, Steinplatz became the center of an entertainment district with beer and festival halls, variety shows and the brothel street Linienstraße .

The lack of reconstruction after the Second World War , the multi-lane expansion of Steinstraße in the 1960s and the partial overbuilding with social housing in the 1980s caused the importance of the square to shrink considerably. The square was redesigned from 1987 with funding from the so-called Nordstadt program, but renamed Freiherr-vom-Stein-Platz for image reasons on the occasion of the reconstruction of the "Eisengießer-Brunnen" in 1990 .

History of origin

In 1858 the magistrate appointed a city architect for the north city, which was growing rapidly due to industrialization . Ludwig König introduced the first building regulations. His successor Brandhoff planned the Nordstadt as a right-angled street network with eleven "jewelery squares", of which only the Viehmarkt / Steinplatz in 1890, the Sedanplatz / Borsigplatz in 1895, the Nordmarkt in 1906 and the Hackländer Platz were realized at an unknown point in time, with the development on the edge had started much earlier, at Steinplatz as early as the 1860s.

Name story

The first name given to us is “Viehmarkt” according to its original function as a marketplace for the northern districts of Dortmund. The name Steinplatz as a place on Steinstrasse is not derived from a personal name, but, as in many other cities, from geological conditions. Considerations to replace the name Steinstraße, which had the image of a red-light district , by Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße, in order to give the foreign company North Rhine-Westphalia in particular a “higher quality” address, could not be realized. With the reconstruction and inauguration of the iron foundry fountain in 1990, the square was only renamed. Today there is a Freiherr-vom-Stein-Platz on Steinstrasse.

The Eisengießer fountain forms a special chapter as a link between the old and the new Steinplatz. The workers' memorial was inaugurated on January 26, 1906 by Lord Mayor Wilhelm Schmieding . The local beautification association had the “Steinplatzbrunnen” built from donations based on a design by the Cologne sculptor professor Wilhelm Fassbinder . The National Socialists melted down the bronze statue for armament purposes. The fountain completely disappeared and was also forgotten. With the redesign of the square, the idea of reconstructing the Eisengießer fountain arose, which the “Förderverein Eisengießer Brunnen am Freiherr-vom-Stein-Platz eV” - like its historical model - realized from donations. On August 10, 1990, the inauguration was carried out by Mayor Günter Samtlebe .
