Wilhelm Fassbinder (born April 20, 1858 in Cologne ; † August 10, 1915 there ) was a German sculptor and medalist . His work can be assigned to both historicism and reform art.

Life

Wilhelm Fassbinder first attended elementary school in Cologne. He then learned the craft of a stonemason in the workshop of his stepfather Johann (Jean) Nothen . Since Nothen had a name in decorative sculpture in Cologne, Fassbinder also received artistic training in this studio, which led him to high quality and great recognition in a very short time. A significant part of his work is connected with the Melaten cemetery in Cologne, for this central cemetery , which is over 200 years old , he created 71 tombs with partly larger than life natural stone sculptures and bronze applications . The architectural sculpture has been a second focus in his work. On the day of its inauguration (October 20, 1911), Fassbinder was personally awarded the Prussian Order of the Crown, 4th class, by Kaiser Wilhelm II for the Kaiser Wilhelm Fountain Monument in Daun .

Fassbinder, who employed up to twelve stonemasons in his Cologne studio at Venloer Strasse 17, was a member of the Association for the Promotion of Sculpture in the Rhineland and Westphalia and the Association of Cologne Sculptors . The latter was particularly concerned with the participation of Cologne artists in the execution of the figures on the Cologne town hall tower . He was not only a member, but also the secretary and his studio was the seat of the association. In addition, he was the first chairman of the Cologne Meister-Wilhelm-Bund , whose primary concern was to represent the professional interests of the sculptors' guild. He was also a member of the Artists' Association of German Sculptors and a member of the committee for the Cologne House at the Cologne Werkbund exhibition in 1914. For example, the German Red Cross or the Cologne Men's Singing Association , which also felt committed to charity , confirm Fassbinder's support for charitable endeavors. Wilhelm Fassbinder was married to Gertrud Hinsen, the daughter of the rector of the cathedral school . The two had three children: Magdalena Maria (* 1886), the opera singer Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Fassbinder (1887–1946) and the concert harpist Antonie Gertrud (* 1890). Fassbinder died suddenly of a stroke at the age of only 57 .
