The Crowds is a German punk band that still exists in its original line-up. Karl-Heinz Stille names them as an important representative of the late 1980s.

biography

The brothers Uli and Andi Ferag met Thomas Gutl Gutmann after the biography on MySpace “in the Battlefield Sandbox”; after Uli started playing bass "after many years of playing handball and soccer together", Gutl got himself a microphone. Uli became a singer after a short time because he sang better than Gutl, who in turn became a guitarist. Andi started playing the drums; At first the band played with a singer, "who soon afterwards decided to turn to pop music because he couldn't handle the tough socially critical lyrics." In 1982 Dieter Rau joined the band, who had been noticed by the other members in the school as a pianist and who started out as a keyboard player. This is considered to be the beginning of The Crowds (then called Nossferatu).

In 1984 The Crowds won a band competition, whereupon Robespiere recorded the single Lügner with the band (from then on the band called themselves The Crowds) and with various guitarists the 12 ” winners are the heroes ; At that time, however, hardcore punk was the trend in the scene , and the band was given "few opportunities to present themselves", although some pieces became known nationwide.

Since “the punk disappeared more and more in Munich at the beginning of the 90s”, the activities of the band also decreased, but “[years of] years of experimentation by Uli Holiday [...] kept the band alive, which eventually came through several concerts in Switzerland also came back to the public ”, meanwhile with Uli on guitar and Harald Freytag on bass. Shortly after Gutl rejoined the band, "freed by family constraints", Harald left the band, which means that the band was back in the original line-up. In this the album Menschenfeinds Feindfahrt was recorded. She was supported by Katz Seger and Olli Nauerz (known from the film Mia san dageng ), who gave the band numerous appearances and reported about The Crowds in their fanzines . In 2010 the self-produced, mixed and mastered album Der fette Marodeur was released .

Music genre

With the use of organ and synthesizer, The Crowds deviates significantly from other punk bands and the hardcore punk that was popular in the scene at the time and was therefore sometimes not recognized as such; In the review of the liar single in Vollsuff - Fanzine it was said:

"Pooh! It’s hard to get put on the cross! If you expect punk, you are unlucky !! Good lyrics, but perfect canned music from the computer is on it. Something for new wave and synth freaks. "

- Kalle Stille : Vollsuff No. 2, 1984

The band has therefore also been compared to The Doors and The Stranglers :

“DOORS, STRANGLERS, CROWDS did someone say ?! Maybe because of the organ and the synths, but THE CROWDS are not a 'we want to sound like an Anglo-American rock band' band. (although The Stranglers are cool and Doors are partly based in Paris) It's only Rock'n'Roll is also a motto that is NOT on our flag! And! Neither are we punk poser Bubis with "Pop star wants to be discovered attitude". "

- The Crowds

The band cites The Stranglers, Killing Joke , The Clash , The Sisters of Mercy , UK Subs , The Damned , The Doors and Ennio Morricone as influences and describes their style as “The Stranglers meet Rammstein ”.
