The Freiherr-vom-Stein-School is a traditional G8 - High School in Oldenburg in Holstein . The grammar school, located near the coast of Oldenburg, is currently attended by around 525 pupils in grades 5 – Q2. The school was named after the Prussian statesman Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom Stein .

history

The school was opened on June 20, 1908 as an association for higher private, boys 'and girls' schools in Oldenburg in Holstein, but at that time did not yet have its current name. On October 1st of the same year, lessons with 40 (out of 50 registered) selected students took place for the first time at the first of a total of three different locations, at Schuhstrasse 101. Just two years later, due to a lack of space, the school moved into the new building on the 4,000 m² property on Hoheluftstrasse. It was not until 1931 that the facility received its current name, which had to be approved by the ministry. Up to this point in time - with the exception of 1914 to 1918 ( First World War ) - regular classes had taken place.

But the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Schule was not spared from National Socialism either. Measures such as the excavation of an air raid shelter, the conversion of the sports hall into a grain store or two-month coal holidays impaired everyday school life. The school was also subordinated to the organization of the Hitler Youth . In the last months of the war it was confiscated and converted into a naval hospital. It was not until March 9, 1946, that the dismissal of all teachers was canceled and school operations resumed.

The new main building on Adolf-Friedrich-Strasse was only occupied in 1967, and the associated gymnasium was completed a year later. The “chick shed” was built for the lower school students, the auditorium followed in 1973. Ten years later, the Association of Friends and Sponsors was founded, which supports the students to this day with grants for class excursions, trips and the like. The cafeteria, run by parents on a voluntary basis, was officially opened in August 2004. On the occasion of the 100th school anniversary, a festival week took place in July 2008. The first G8 class was set up in the 2008/2009 school year, which entered the introductory phase of the upper school together with the last G9 class in 2013. In 2010, the revival of the Steinpost followed, a school-internal newspaper, which in the following years can assert itself as an essential source of entertainment and information for the students, but also for teachers and above all parents. In January 2011 the theater building was modernized and a music room was added. The old cafeteria has moved into the new canteen in the auditorium complex and offers space for up to 100 students. In November, the energetic renovation of the “chicken coop” followed. During the same period, the school's specialist rooms and some classrooms were equipped with computers, projectors and internet access. In 2013 an additional computer room was built: the school now has two modern PC rooms with 30 workstations and smartboards. In November 2014, the school newspaper editorial office was equipped with two modern tablets and the new, redesigned "Issue 10" was published. In addition to the new school newspaper logo, the new website was also put into operation. With the platform, Steinpost was one of the first school newspapers to integrate a WebMag (Internet magazine), thus combining printed content with interactive content. For this cross-media work, she was awarded the special prize of the Federal Association of German Newspaper Publishers (BDZV) in 2015.
