The barons of Woellwarth (also Woellwarth-Lauterburg or Wöllwarth ) are a south German noble family. They rose after 1363 through Georg von Woellwarth.

It is widespread, but not proven, that their ancestral castle was Wellwart Castle near Harburg . In 1418, starting from Lauterburg Castle , they came to estates in Essingen , and then to other property in the area. In 1538 Jörg Heinrich von Woellwarth acquired the patronage for the Essingen church from the Kirchheim am Ries monastery. 1544 gave them the Emperor Charles V , the blood jurisdiction , and in 1547 issued Jörg Heinrich von Woellwarth the "village rules" for Essingen. Probably only after the Peace of Augsburg did they accept the Lutheran creed. The village of Essingen has been Protestant since that time. In 1696/1697 Alexander Maximilian von Woellwarth sold a third of the village to the Counts of Degenfeld because of excessive indebtedness .

The Peace of Pressburg of 1805 and the Rhine Confederation Act of 1806 led to the loss of independence and the transfer of the territories of the family belonging to the imperial knighthood to Württemberg.

The lord of the castle in Essingen in 1957 was Konrad von Woellwarth-Lauterburg. The family's coat of arms is a red crescent moon in a white field.

Since 1981 Philipp Freiherr von Woellwarth-Lauterburg has been lord of the castle in Hohenroden Castle , located between Essingen and Lautern . The Hohenroden Castle Estate has been owned by the von Woellwarth family since 1401.
