The Freisebad was a bathing establishment on Dr.-Kahlbaum-Allee in downtown Görlitz in Saxony .

In 1887, the Magdeburg medical councilor Walter Freise founded the Kaltwasser-Heilanstalt on the Promenade (today: Dr.-Kahlbaum-Allee) opposite the Tivoli and not far from the Kahlbaum'schen mental hospital (later: 2nd medical clinic). Along with the Hoffmann'schen Badeanstalt on Lindenweg and the Zentralbad on Hospitalstrasse, it was one of three bathing establishments in the city.

Freise was an assistant doctor in the hospital on Berliner Strasse in Görlitz. In 1885 he opened a doctor's office on the promenade. Back then, the promenade was a popular promenade for Görlitz citizens and, coming from the city, led past the city park to the blockhouse on the Neisse Viaduct .

In Freise's sanatorium, tub , steam and hot air baths as well as brine , spruce needle and herbal baths as well as mud baths in Franzensbader moor soil were offered. Electric light and carbon dioxide baths completed the offer. A swimming pool was also available to visitors from the start, which was designed for both non-swimmers and swimmers. It was seven meters wide, 15 meters long and at the deepest point 2.80 meters deep, with the basin rising to the opposite side.

Walter Freise headed the spa until 1905. Due to the high financial losses, he gave the spa to an association that continued to operate the spa until 1919. Despite the subsidies that the city had been paying since 1901, the bathing establishment was unable to make a profit. The association finally offered the bath to the city, which continued operations from April 1, 1920.

Even after the Second World War , the outdoor pool was continued and most recently housed the steam bath, sauna, showers, bath tubs, a solarium and the swimming pool. The city closed the Freisebad on March 31, 1996.

In 2009 the city had the large chimney secured on the back and the roof and the roof drainage had to be renewed in a makeshift manner, but according to the city the roof needed a complete renovation and the bathroom a complete renovation, which the city could not afford financially.

In June 2009 a concert by the band Funk de Nite was to take place in the Freisebad under the motto unheard places of the 14th Görlitz Jazz Days , but this was moved to the old machine factory of the wagon construction . In the same year, however, the bath opened its doors for the day of the open monument. It was used as a location for the film Grand Budapest Hotel .

There were plans to reactivate the bathroom and the former 2nd medical clinic as a competence center for the care of dementia patients (Kahlbaum project) and to make the bathroom accessible again to the citizens. However, the plans were on hold in 2011.
