Fresco , sold under the brand name Wellant or Wellants, is a variety of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). The apple is sold as a club variety, but its rustic appearance is supposed to be reminiscent of old apple varieties.
description
The medium to large apple is tall. Its average weight is around 210 grams. The edge of the calyx pit is slightly bulged. Fresco has an intense medium to dark red color. The lenticels are pronounced and partly rusty . The stem and calyx pits are rusted. The apple is very different in appearance from other new varieties and is reminiscent of old apples.
The taste of the apple is sweet and very fruity with acidity. Overall it is aromatic. The flesh is juicy and crisp.
The tree is growing strongly.
history
The apple emerged from a breeding program at Plant Research International, Wageningen, Netherlands. Breeding began in 1987. The Wellant brand name was registered in 2006, and plant variety protection has existed since 2008. The apple is marketed by Inovafruit from the Netherlands.
Cultivation
Fresco flowers mid-early, just before Golden Delicious and Elstar. In Europe the harvest time is mid-September and lies between Elstar and Jonagold . Ripe for consumption begins around four weeks after harvest. Fresco has little tendency to alternate , but produces bare side shoots. In the cold store, the apple can be kept until March.
Fresco is susceptible to powdery mildew , scab and fruit tree canker .
