The Fridtjof Island ( French Îlot Fridtjof ) is an island in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located northeast of Vázquez Island off the southeast coast of Wiencke Island .
Participants in the Belgica expedition (1897–1899), led by the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery, discovered and named the island. Probable namesake is the Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen .
