Fried ice cream (ger .: Fried Ice Cream) is a dessert that especially in North America is widespread. It consists of a breaded ice cream ball that is briefly fried in hot oil so that the ice cream stays cold but has a warm, crispy shell.

A third version claims the dessert was invented in Japanese tempura restaurants in the 1960s .

In the United States, "Fried Ice Cream" is primarily associated with Asian cuisine and first appeared in the New York Times' restaurant reviews of Chinese , Japanese and Polynesian restaurants in the 1970s . It is now associated with Mexican cuisine , mainly because the Mexican restaurant chain "Chi-Chi's" made it from tortillas and cinnamon in the early 1980s and offered it as a "Chi-Chi's" specialty.

Manufacturing

The common way to make fried ice cream is to cool ice cream to a very low temperature (lower than what you normally keep it at). It is then (often turned in raw egg) in corn flakes or biscuit crumbs and briefly fried. Due to its extremely low temperature, the ice does not melt during the deep-frying process.

Before serving, the dessert is often sprinkled with cinnamon, sugar and a little peppermint or served with whipped cream and honey .

Versions

The Asian version of the recipe uses tempura batter instead of corn flakes. For the ice cream you usually use the flavors green tea, vanilla or red beans. In addition to cornflakes and biscuits, nuts or tortillas can also be used for the batter in Mexican cuisine.
