Frieda Steurs (born September 28, 1958 in Reet, Belgium ) is a Belgian linguist and translation scholar who has made a name for herself in the field of terminology and lexicology . She is the dean of the language and communication department at the Dutch-speaking university KU Leuven in Belgium.

She is the chair of the international terminology network TermNet, based in Vienna .

Life

Frieda Steurs studied Germanic Philology (Dutch - English) at the KU Leuven and graduated in 1980 with summa cum laude. From 1982 she worked as an assistant professor and obtained her doctorate in general linguistics in 1990. She has been working as a professor for the language and communication department at the Dutch-speaking KU Leuven since 1991, for which she has also been dean since 2011. Her subjects include terminology and documentation, media and translation, and specialist translation in the fields of technology and science.

Frieda Steurs has made a name for herself especially in the area of ​​terminology. She was already chair of NL-TERM (Dutch terminology organization for the Netherlands and Belgium) and CoTerm (official government organization for terminology for Belgium and the Netherlands). Since 2000 she has also chaired the TC37 committee of the Dutch standardization institute NEN. She has also been Head of the Department of Translation and Interpreting at Lessius University College since 2003 and has been Chair of the International Terminology Network TermNet since 2008. She also represents her institute at the annual general assembly of CIUTI .

She has already participated in numerous research projects and is currently involved in several projects. This includes TransCert, a project launched on the initiative of the Directorate General for Translation of the European Commission with the aim of developing a transnational certification system for translators. Her main research areas are terminology, language technology , specialist communication, specialist translation and localization . In an interview, she described terminology as essential for all aspects of communication.

Frieda Steurs is married and has four children.
