Peace of Malmo (1512)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Peace of Malmö was concluded in Malmö on April 23, 1512 and ended the Danish-Hanseatic War that broke out in 1501 and 1509/10 between Lübeck and the Wendish cities of the Hanseatic League on the one hand and the main opponent Denmark under Admiral Jens Holgersen Ulfstand . The naval war of the Hanseatic cities had been directed against the restriction of the trade privileges of the Hanseatic cities in the Baltic Sea , in particular against the massive penetration of Dutch competition. The people of Lübeck under Mayor Thomas von Wickede sought the peace negotiations when it was clear that there was no prospect of a clear victory due to the roughly equal balance of power. In this respect, the privileges of the Wendish cities were confirmed as a result of the peace agreement, but on the other hand, Dutch trade with Denmark had to be tolerated in the future.
