Thomas von Wickede (* around 1470 in Lübeck ; † November 28, 1527 there ) was, as mayor of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, its greatest foreign politician in the first quarter of the 16th century.

Life

Thomas von Wickede came from the Lübeck council family von Wickede . His mother Heileke b. Bere (1446–1511) was a daughter of the councilor Johann Bere . Thomas became a member of the circle society in 1501 . In 1506 he was first councilor, then in 1511 mayor of the city. His work falls in a time of armed conflicts between Lübeck and the Hanseatic League with Denmark , which, thanks to his political and diplomatic skills, ended in favor of the city. He represented the city many times at Hanseatic days , at the Peace of Malmö in 1512, and in negotiations with the Netherlands in Bremen in 1514. In 1524 he represented Lübeck's interests in Hamburg in the negotiations on the deposition of King Christian II of Denmark. At the coronation of his successor Frederick I of Denmark he headed the Hanseatic delegation and was knighted by Frederick I in the presence of King Gustav I Wasa of Sweden.

family

He was married to Geseke von Calven (* around 1478, † 1524). She was a daughter of the councilor Heinrich von Calven . Gottschalk († 1558) was also elected to the council by his sons in 1548. Another son Blasius († 1547) was a captain on Bornholm. The daughter Hedwig married Nikolaus Bardewik , who was appointed councilor when her father died at the age of only 21.
