Prince of Peace

Prince of Peace ( Prince of Peace ) is a sovereign title in Isa 9,5  EU of the Christian Old Testament and the Jewish Bible . It is a short quotation from the longer biblical context of a prophecy of Isaiah. The understanding of this passage is completely different in the Christian tradition than in the Jewish one.

“ Because a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The rule is on his shoulder; He is called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. "

The statement is related to Christ as a prophecy in the Christian liturgy and is included in the reading on Christmas Eve .

The title was recorded in the chorale-based Bach cantata Du Friedefürst, Herr Jesu Christ (BWV 116) and the Black Gospel Down by the Riverside as well as in the Advent song Daughter Zion, rejoice .

Rulers who pursue a peacemaking policy were given the title of Prince of Peace as an honorary name . The Spanish prince and prime minister Manuel de Godoy (1767-1851) was called Príncipe de la Paz .
