Peace of Utrecht (1474)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Treaty of Utrecht was in 1474 in Utrecht to end the 1469 begun Hanseatic-English war between the Hanseatic League and England closed.

The penetration of English merchants, the Merchant Adventurer , into the Baltic Sea region ( bypassers ) and the constant harassment of the Stalhof , the office of the Hanseatic cities in London , by the English crown led in 1470 to a joint war between the cities of the Wendish and the Prussian quarter of the Hanseatic League. This war was fought as a naval war in the form of a pirate war. The most famous ship of this naval war is the Peter von Danzig, led by the captain Paul Beneke . The Treaty of Utrecht brought a favorable conclusion for the Hanseatic cities under the leadership of the Lübeck Mayor Hinrich Castorp , the Lübeck Syndicus Johannes Osthusen , the Hamburg Mayor Hinrich Murmester and the Hamburg Councilor Henning Büring : the advance of English long-distance merchants into the Baltic Sea area and their room for maneuver there became restricted, the Stalhof in London secured and the privileges of the Hanseatic League largely confirmed there. The result promoted the cloth trade in the Hanseatic cities for years. Maritime safety was restored for England under King Edward IV of England, which was crisis-ridden by the Wars of the Roses .
