The Friedensbrücke ( Polish: most Pokoju ) is a 1957 newly built bridge on the Oder in Wroclaw . It connects the Ohlauer Vorstadt with the Sandvorstadt east of the Cathedral Island and west of the Grunwald Bridge .
history
In 1875, as part of the large-scale modernization program of the Breslau bridges above the old town area, a four- bay wrought iron bridge was built based on the design specifications of Johann Wilhelm Schwedler ( Schwedlerträger ). It was named Lessing Bridge in honor of the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing , who had lived in Breslau for a few years.
The prestressed concrete bridge with three yokes built between 1957 and 1958 in place of the Lessing Bridge, which was destroyed in World War II, was designed by Professor Jan Kmita at the Technical University of Breslau . Only the bridgeheads of the old bridge could be included in the new construction. The bridge was initially designated as most Wojewódzki (Voivodeship Bridge ) after the neighboring Voivodeship Office building and renamed the Peace Bridge in 1966 based on the Rapacki Plan in the presence of Adam Rapacki .
description
The bridge consists of two independent prestressed concrete boxes on two shared river pillars, with the bridge box located to the west originally accommodating the tram tracks and a sidewalk and the wider eastern one a four-lane carriageway and a sidewalk. During the renovation at the beginning of the 21st century, the tram tracks were moved in the middle, so that there are now two separate lanes, two lanes on each side of the tram tracks.
The very slim and unadorned shape was deliberately chosen by the draftsman in order to keep the view of the cathedral island undisturbed.
