Friederich Martens
Friederich Martens , also: Friedrich , Friderich (17th century, exact life dates unknown), was - according to his own name - a "Hamburger" who worked as a "ship barber ". He left two travelogues with numerous pen drawings of landscapes, flora and fauna from 1671 about a trip on a whaling ship to Svalbard and Greenland as well as another sea voyage to Spain .
Friederich Martens' Spitzbergische und Grönlandische Reisebeschreibung was printed in Hamburg in 1675 under the title Spitzbergische or Groenlandische Reisebeschreibung done in 1671 . This work was translated into Italian in 1680 and 1683, into Dutch in 1685, into English in 1694 and into French in 1715; it remained an important source for Arctic explorers until the 19th century.
The sea voyage to Spain remained unknown for a good 250 years; it was published for the first time and once by Wilhelm Junk in Berlin in 1925 and printed in a small edition, albeit in a smaller format and translated into current German. The manuscript -, thereof provided consisting of 62 sheets 38 with pen and ink drawings, and integrated in the makulierte parchment a medieval Choirbook side - belonged to the book collection of the Hamburger scholars Johann Peter carbon , which it in 1768 together with its library as Donum Kohlianum the Altona school academicum Christianeum gave where it is to this day.
