Abed Abdi

Abed Abdi (born February 1942 in Haifa ) is an Arab-Israeli painter and draftsman , graphic artist , sculptor , blacksmith and lecturer .

Life

Abed Abdi first studied art in Israel with Abaham Yaskil and Zvi Mairovitch and held his first exhibition in Tel Aviv in 1962 . From 1964 to 1972 studied at the Dresden University of Fine Arts . His professors were Lea Grundig , Gerhard Bondzin and Gerhard Kettner . His final thesis at the academy received the 2nd prize, which gave Abdi the opportunity to spend another year at the art college and specialize in murals and sculptures.

In 1972 he returned to Haifa and worked as a sculptor, painter, caricaturist, art critic and graphic artist for various Arabic publications. At the same time he designed several murals. From 1985 to 2008 he was a lecturer at the Pedagogical Academy for Teacher Training in Haifa, where he taught art.

Examples of his allegorical monuments in Galilee , which symbolize human strength and resistance, are a narrative mural depicting Elijah's defiance and survival, and a bronze memorial dedicated to six Palestinians who were shot.

Abed Abdi has created numerous monuments and murals: In 1977, together with the Jewish artist Gershon Knispel, he designed a sculpture to commemorate the "Day of the Country" in memory of the events of March 30, 1976, and in 1984 a memorial for anniversary of the Galilean municipality of Shefa Amr, 1999 the memorial in Kafr Kanna and 2001 the memorial in Kafr Manda . Abdi murals are known from Haifa, Tel Aviv and Nazareth , for example .

Abed Abdi had solo exhibitions in Qatar , Israel , Jordan , Belgium , Hungary and Bulgaria . He has participated in over 50 group exhibitions, including Palestinian-Israeli exhibitions between 1980 and 1987 in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem . Other joint exhibitions , such as “It's possible” between 1988 and 1990, were shown in the USA and Germany. In addition, his work was shown in the exhibition “Solidarity with the Palestinian People” in Tokyo , Berlin , Brussels , Belgrade and Athens . In 2010 Abdi had the exhibition “50 Years of Creativity” in the Um el Fahem Gallery in Israel.

Abdi is a member of the “Israeli Association of Painters and Sculptors” and the Jewish-Arab Center in Beit Hagefen. This enables him to bring Palestinian and Israeli artists together and to organize joint exhibitions. Abdi founded the "Ibdaa Society" to promote the fine arts in the Arab-Israeli sector and the "Arabelle workshop" in Haifa to promote the fine arts and intercultural dialogue through art .

Abdi was President of the Al Midan Theater in Haifa from 2004 to 2009. Since 2008 he has been co-curator of the “Holiday of Holidays” project (Haifa, Israel).

Honors

The city of Haifa awarded Abdi the "Herman Struck Best Artist of the Year" award in 1973, which he received again in 1999. In 1973 he also received the "Young Artist Award" of the International Youth Festival in Berlin. In 2008, Abed Abdi became the first Arab artist living in Israel to receive the Prize for Art and Graphic Arts from the Israeli Ministry of Science, Culture and Sport.

In 2010 the mayor of Haifa made him an honorary citizen .
