Friederich Mautner

Friederich Ignaz Mautner (* 1921 in Vienna ; † 1996 ) was an American mathematician.

As a Jew, Mautner emigrated to the USA via England after the annexation of Austria . He received his doctorate from Princeton University in 1948 (Unitary Representations of Infinite Groups). He taught at Johns Hopkins University and later at the University of Paris and in Italy.

He was at the Institute for Advanced Study several times (1946/47, 1954/56, 1965/66).

He dealt with representation theory of groups, functional analysis and differential geometry .

According to him, Mautner's Lemma and Mautner's phenomenon in representation theory of Lie groups named. Mautner came across it in connection with the ergodic theory of geodetic rivers. Mautner's phenomenon describes the observation that a Hilbert space vector in a unitary representation of a Lie group G, which is invariant under a one-parameter subgroup, which is given by the exponential mapping of an element of the Lie algebra of G, is also invariant under a larger subgroup.

With a paper from 1958 he was a pioneer of the representation theory of reducible p-adic groups .

A special five-dimensional Lie group is named after him (Mautner group).

Joseph Shalika is one of his PhD students .
