Friederike Güssefeld (born 1984 in Hamburg ) is a German film director and screenwriter .

Professional background

Friederike Güssefeld studied modern German literature and communication studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . From 2008 to 2018 she completed her studies in directing at the HFF Munich , specializing in documentary film and television journalism , where she made various short film projects and two documentary films. Today she lives in Berlin and works as a director and screenwriter for fictional and documentary material.

Friederike Güssefeld's films were shown at national and international festivals and have received multiple awards.

Her graduation film, the documentary Out of Place , premiered in 2019 in the International Competition des Visions du Réel in Nyon and was awarded the First Steps Award for best documentary film. In 2020 Out of Place ran as a guest of the Perspektive Deutsches Kino at the Berlinale . The film is about three German young people who live in so-called foreign educational measures. They should be prepared in a structured and uniform everyday life for an adapted life back in Germany, regardless of their longing for personal freedom and simultaneous belonging. The film deals with growing up in an increasingly commodified world.

The documentary film If you regret them, they can die badly was shown at the Hamburg Documentary Film Week 2016. After twenty years, the director returned to her mother's home village in the south of Brandenburg for the documentary film . The story of a village and its inhabitants is told on the basis of a series of mysterious deaths. In interviews, they remember the time after the war, the GDR and the turnaround: only about the present there is hardly anything to say. A place that is only kept alive by memory, that is threatened with extinction - and with it its stories.
