With the Green-Whites, located northeast of the Dortmund harbor, his performances in the Evinger rose garden in the spring of 1967 led him into the goal of the German amateur national team and into the field of vision of the competitor SG Wattenscheid 09 . For the 1967/68 round, the almost 28-year-old moved to Wattenscheid. In his second round he celebrated the championship and promotion to the Regionalliga West .

In the 1969 promotion round, the SG prevailed against SSVg Velbert , DJK Gütersloh and Borussia Brand . The first game in the Regionalliga West led Wattenscheid to the promotion favorites and local rivals VfL Bochum . On August 17, 1969, the newcomer won with a goalkeeper Friedhelm Schulte who was in great shape with 2-0 goals. Three more successes followed in the next three games and coach Hubert Schieth's team was at the top of the table with 8-0 points. The fifth game day, on September 14, 1969, brought Wattenscheid's first defeat with a 1: 4 defeat at Fortuna Düsseldorf . At the end of the lap, the newcomer landed in eighth place. After the surprisingly good start in the further course of the round, Schulte relinquished the regular place in the gate to Willy Reese and played a total of ten games in the Regionalliga West.

Selection games

At the age of 30, he played in the UEFA Amateur Cup matches against Yugoslavia and Austria in September and October 1969 . Hans-Jürgen Bradler made his debut in the next international match on April 7, 1970 in Vienna against Austria in the goal of the DFB amateurs. The amateur national team played 22 international matches from April 12, 1967 to March 25, 1970, with Friedhelm Schulte not guarding the selection goal in only two games.
