The Connewitz cemetery is the burial place of the Evangelical Lutheran Parish Leipzig - Connewitz - Lößnig . As a whole, it is a listed building .

Location and shape

The Connewitz cemetery is located in the Leipzig district of the same name on Meusdorfer Strasse at number 80. It extends as an almost rectangular area of around 3.5 hectares to the southeast. The central axis is an avenue of mighty linden trees and leads to a memorial for the Connewitzers who died in the First World War . For the approximately 5000 grave sites, the cemetery is divided into 28 numbered - except for the four southern - rectangular sections, which are also followed by the network of paths. In addition to historical wall graves, there are also numerous community graves where only the names of those buried are listed.

The cemetery chapel is designed in the Art Deco style and offers space for over sixty people. On the side of the altar shows a sandstone relief with a cross and kneeling prayers. There is an electronic Ahlborn organ on the gallery . The morgue as well as the administration and a flower shop adjoin the chapel. Not far from the chapel is a wooden-clad belfry with a bronze bell.

The cemetery wall along Meusdorfer Straße is artistically designed with graffiti, while the one along Meusdorfer Straße is defaced with illegal graffiti.

history

Until 1882, the old Connewitz cemetery was where the Paul Gerhardt Church, built in 1898/1899, stands today. In 1882, in preparation for the building of the church, a new cemetery was created on the path leading from Connewitz to Thonberg , today's Meusdorfer Straße. It was initially about half the size, but was given the size it is today in 1886.

In 1926/1927, today's chapel was built with the involvement of the neighboring buildings. The architect was Georg Staufert, the artistic design comes from the Leipzig sculptor Max Alfred Brumme . The chapel is the only new cemetery building in Leipzig that was built after the First World War and has been preserved to this day. A comprehensive reconstruction took place in 1991/1992.

The belfry near the chapel was built in 1954 for the 6th German Evangelical Church Congress . The graffiti design of the cemetery wall took place in 2017.
