history

The prisoner-of-war team main camp VII A was a prisoner-of-war camp of the German Wehrmacht , which was built in autumn 1939 in the north of Moosburg (Upper Bavaria) between Amper and Isar , halfway between Freising and Landshut, on a railway line (separate train station). Towards the end of the Second World War , more than 80,000 prisoners of war of many nationalities were interned there and in its sub-camps. It was considered the largest prisoner of war camp in Germany.

In 1945 a large number of the dead of the Western Allies were reburied in military cemeteries in Germany, in Luxembourg, etc. In 1958, the remains of the remaining dead from Oberreit were transferred to the military cemetery in Schwabstadl , Landsberg district, and the cemetery was abandoned. 756 Soviet soldiers, 59 Yugoslavs, 6 Poles, 5 Romanians and one Greek found their final resting place in the facility in Schwabstadl. The remains of 33 Italian soldiers were reburied in the Italian war cemetery in the forest cemetery in Munich.

A memorial cross was erected and ceremonially consecrated on site in 1982. In addition to state representatives, representatives of the French camp community were also present. In 2014, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the construction of the camp, the memorial was redesigned and a historical memorial stone was added on the initiative of the Stalag Moosburg eV association together with the city of Moosburg ad Isar. In a memorial service on October 18, 2014, the deceased was remembered and the site reopened.
