Overview board of the St. Margarethen cemetery

The St. Margarethen cemetery is the cemetery of the municipality of Binningen in the canton of Basel-Landschaft . It is located on the edge of a residential area between the Evangelical Reformed Church of St. Margarethen and the Roman Catholic parish Heiligkreuz and consists of a not directly connected north and south part. The northern part was probably laid out as a "Gottesacker" in 1813 and expanded in 1862 to include the southern part. The community gardening department is responsible for maintaining the cemetery.

description

Northern part

Tombstone of Jonas Breitenstein, died in 1877. However, the tombstone was only created after his bones had been transferred from the Kannenfeld cemetery in the 1930s.

The northern part of the cemetery, designed as a stepped park with hanging gardens , is mainly home to family graves . These are not given in sequence, but can be freely chosen by the relatives, as long as there is no freshly raised grave in the desired area. For reasons of piety , graves that have been lifted are left fallow for as long as possible, but at least for several years. There are also number of graves of earth and urn burials , children's series graves, urn niches communal urn graves and inaugurated in 2011 communal grave for early lost children . The latter grave is a special service provided by the community, as miscarriages up to the 22nd week of pregnancy do not have to be reported and burial is not mandatory under Swiss law.

The northern part is enclosed by a stone wall that has existed since its inauguration as a church in 1813. Via the main path, visitors can reach various fountains, benches, small meadows and all graves from the main entrance past the trees, although not all areas are wheelchair accessible. There are sockets on each lantern. At the opposite end there is a funeral hall , sanitary facilities and the administration building next to urn niches .

The oldest surviving tombstone dates from 1908 and is located directly at the main entrance of the northern part. The gravestone with the earliest date of death (May 23, 1877) belongs to Jonas Breitenstein , whose bones were transferred from the Kannenfeld cemetery in Basel to Binningen in the 1930s .

Southern part

The southern part of the cemetery is an extension from 1862. It mainly contains row graves for burial and urn burials as well as urn niches and, in contrast to the northern part, is surrounded by a simple chain-link fence. There are sculptures at both ends, which are connected by a path. Abdications mainly take place in the opposite Roman Catholic parish Heiligkreuz, whose premises can be used regardless of the denomination of the deceased. There are free parking spaces, covered lounge areas and sanitary facilities available.

A special feature of the cemetery is its hilly location high above Basel . In good weather, you can take a look over the city from the southern part in particular.

use

Family graves have a rest period of 50 years, which can be extended against payment of the costs, while all other graves are closed after 25 years. Since more and more deceased people prefer cremation, the space conditions in both parts of the cemetery have relaxed a lot. An exhumation and reburial is generally possible a grave reservations are not. Burial in a row grave is free of charge for people who had their last place of residence in Binningen or who died on the territory of the Binningen community, whereas family graves for up to six burials are always chargeable. Foreigners must meet special requirements in order to be buried in the cemetery as an exception. This includes a long previous residence in Binningen or a special relationship with the community. The municipal council decides on such requests.

In contrast to other cemeteries in Switzerland, the facility is open day and night all year round. In winter the cemetery is illuminated in the evening.
