The cemetery gardening is a specialist division of horticulture . Cemetery nurseries specialize in the cultivation, propagation, marketing, planting and care of perennials and woody plants for grave planting in the cemetery , as well as the execution of all services related to the care of the grave sites.
history
The profession of cemetery gardener developed around 1850 from the staffing of the communally operated cemeteries. The grave digger began with the design and planting of the grave sites. In 2008, the industry's turnover was 1.76 billion euros. In 2009 there were 2,200 specialized companies in Germany that mainly provide cemetery gardening services.
activities
In the cemetery nursery, grave facilities are usually planted and cared for by order for grave maintenance. Professional organization
The cemetery gardeners are organized in Germany in the Federation of German Cemetery Gardeners (BdF) in the Central Association of Horticulture (ZVG).

Further professional measures in cemetery horticulture lead to master gardeners, horticultural technicians and the academic degrees of horticultural engineer, bachelor, agricultural engineer or master.
Day of the cemetery
The Association of German Cemetery Gardeners organizes Cemetery Day nationwide. Cemetery Day was initiated by florists, cemetery gardeners, stonemasons, funeral directors, cemetery administrations and local authorities. This has taken place annually since 2001. Cemetery Day is always held on the third weekend in September and takes place in around 45 cities in Germany. The day is up to the cemeteries and communities.
The aim of this day is to put the cemetery in a different light and show it as a habitat for flora and fauna and as a place to relax.
Cemetery Day has also been celebrated in several Swiss cities since 2014.
