Cemetery nurseries specialize in the cultivation, propagation, marketing, planting and care of perennials and woody plants for grave planting in the cemetery , as well as the execution of all services related to the care of the grave sites.

The profession of cemetery gardener developed around 1850 from the staffing of the communally operated cemeteries. The grave digger began with the design and planting of the grave sites. Day of the cemetery

The Association of German Cemetery Gardeners organizes Cemetery Day nationwide. Cemetery Day was initiated by florists, cemetery gardeners, stonemasons, funeral directors, cemetery administrations and local authorities. This has taken place annually since 2001. Cemetery Day is always held on the third weekend in September and takes place in around 45 cities in Germany. The day is up to the cemeteries and communities.

The aim of this day is to put the cemetery in a different light and show it as a habitat for flora and fauna and as a place to relax.

Cemetery Day has also been celebrated in several Swiss cities since 2014.
