The Državna cesta D2 ( Croatian for “National Road D2”), also called Podravska magistrala (Croatian for “Podravina Magistrale”), is a national road in Croatia . The road follows the course of the river Drava and bears the historical name of the Croatian Drau region Podravina .

The entire length of the Podravina Magistrale is to be expanded into an expressway and thus better connect the northern part of Croatia with the eastern part. The construction of the expressway is intended in particular to promote the economic upswing in Slavonia . Parts of the future expressway have already been completed. The completed sections include the northern bypasses of Virovitica and Slatina (the northern bypass of Đurđevac is under construction). In 2008 the construction of the Virovitica - Slatina section began.

The total length of the current route of the D2 is 325 km. The future expressway should lead from Ormož on the Slovenian border over the island of Virje - Varaždin - Koprivnica ( A12 ) - Đurđevac - Pitomača - Virovitica ( A13 ) - Slatina - Osijek and Vukovar to Ilok on the Serbian border. On the Slovenian side, the expansion of the Ormož - Ptuj route (motorway connection) is planned.

The national road D2 leads through areas with high economic development potential, especially in the fields of agriculture and industry. As early as 1999, the Podravina expressway was classified in the highest priority category of the Croatian national transport strategy. The expansion to an expressway has been delayed so far, however, as the route, which is otherwise heavily used by heavy vehicles, did not coincide with the planned plans for pan-European traffic corridors .
