The Salbke cemetery chapel is a cemetery chapel at the Salbke cemetery in Magdeburg .

Today's chapel is the successor to a small listed chapel that was built in 2010/2011 and was demolished in March 2009.

The original chapel, designed as a simple brick building in the neo-Gothic style, was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the cemetery of the municipality of Salbke , which was opened in 1905 . The chapel offered space for 60 guests. The floor plan was T-shaped. There was a round window in the center of the gable at the front. The celebration hall, which was oriented in a north-south direction, had large windows designed as pointed arches, which were structured by narrow cast-iron tracery . On the front wall behind the catafalque was a group of three windows decorated with stained glass. While the middle window showed a figurative representation, the other two windows had ornaments . An extension of the morgue was probably built in the 1920s . The building was remarkable as a simple cemetery architecture with a village character from the time of late historicism and was placed under monument protection.

On March 20, 2009, at the instigation of the Magdeburg city administration, the chapel was demolished because it was dilapidated . The measure was particularly criticized by the residents of Salbke. Signatures were collected to preserve the chapel. There was also clear criticism of the demolition plans from local politicians. The neglect of the public building, which had led to the poor condition of the building, the information policy of the city administration and the demolition decision, which was made for reasons of cost and not of monument protection, was criticized.

restored windows in the new cemetery chapel

The stained glass work was salvaged from demolition. On December 7th, 2009 the city council of the state capital Magdeburg decided to build a new replacement building at a request of the alliance green council factions. On November 9, 2011, the new building was opened to the public by the councilor Klaus Zimmermann . The glass work from the old chapel has been restored and has been incorporated into the new building.
