Friedrich Ludwig Jahn

The Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Museum is located in the house built by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn in 1838/39 in Freyburg (Unstrut) on Schloßstraße, on the eastern outskirts near the Unstrut weir . The house was converted into a museum in 1936 after it had served as a youth hostel and gymnastics home since 1924 . In this context, the remains of Jahn from the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Memorial Gym , also in Freyburg, were reburied in the crypt on the property.

Permanent exhibition

In August 1999, the house was restored and refurbished according to the original Jahn building plan and reopened with the new permanent exhibition Friedrich Ludwig Jahn: Leben und Work , presented in the rooms on the ground floor . In this exhibition Jahn is shown as a person of his time and the prevailing social conditions in it, also with his character peculiarities and his time-bound views and expressions. This consideration of the "whole Jahn" with its advantages, achievements and goals, but also with its human weaknesses, failures, disappointments and conflicts, runs through the four exhibition complexes:

Life's work

The first complex is dedicated to Jahn's life's work, the development of modern civic physical education and its design as a public matter. The gymnastics horse that the Berlin gymnasts gave to "their gymnastics father " for Christmas 1812 is of particular historical importance . Jahn's book Die deutsche Turnkunst , which he published together with Ernst Eiselen in 1816, claims special significance in the portrayal of gymnastics .

Jahn privately

The second complex depicts Jahn's private life from his childhood to his death. Objects from the personal belongings of Jahn and his family are shown, including a four-chess game, a notebook, his walking stick and his tobacco pipe and pouch. The six years of imprisonment and imprisonment are attested by different documents.

Jahn as a publicist

The exhibited handwritten texts are only a small part of the fundus of the museum. The manuscript on the Thirty Years' War as well as his wife's letter illustrate the loss of books, letters and other manuscripts that Jahn suffered in the fire in his apartment in 1838. The “armchair” in Jahn's study and the writing secretary are among the pieces of furniture that have been preserved from his possession.

Jahn as a politician

The fourth complex represents the high points of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn's political activity. Here you can find documents and documents on the national education plan , the book Deutsches Volksthum and his initiative to found the secret German Confederation. The establishment of the public gymnasium on the Hasenheide and the Wartburg Festival held in autumn 1817 are also discussed in this complex. Finally, documents show FL Jahn's arrest and the gymnastics ban . The last topic in this complex is dedicated to Jahn's work as a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly in 1848/49.

Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Society V.

The association for the preservation of tradition and preservation of the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn memorials (founded in 1992) changed its name in 2008 through an amendment to the statutes and is now continuing its activities as the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Gesellschaft based in Freyburg (Unstrut) . The tasks of the association are now broader and formulate a higher claim: The company dedicates its activities to the goal of researching the life and work of the founder of the gymnastics movement in Germany and his environment, to interpret his significance in the past and present, to his legacy preserve and spread. To this end, the company maintains relationships with the German Gymnastics Federation and the regional gymnastics associations, universities, schools, museums and organizations that are committed to the cause. As one of the great Germans, Jahn should be brought into the focus of a wider public.
