Christopher William Tancill (born February 7, 1968 in Livonia , Michigan ) is a retired American ice hockey player . During his career he played for the Hartford Whalers , Detroit Red Wings , Dallas Stars and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League and the Kloten Flyers , the SC Rapperswil-Jona and EV train in the Swiss National League A .
Career
Tancill played for four years from 1986 to 1990 at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his final season there, he led the team to win the college championship and was named Most Valuable Player of the finals.
After the American had already been selected by the Hartford Whalers in the 1989 NHL Supplemental Draft , he signed his first professional contract in Hartford for the 1990/91 season . But he played, with the exception of nine games in the NHL, mostly in the American Hockey League with the Springfield Indians , the farm team of the Whalers, with whom he won the Calder Cup at the end of the season . After moving to the Detroit Red Wings in December 1991, he also played there in the farm team, the Adirondack Red Wings , and won the Calder Cup again, as in the previous year. He was also appointed to the league's First All-Star Team. In the NHL he came only five times during the two years with the Red Wings. Since his contract had expired after the 1992/93 season , he moved in the summer of 1993 as a free agent for one year to the Dallas Stars , where he again could not earn a regular place in the NHL squad. This was followed by another change on a free agent basis to the San Jose Sharks . There he was used more regularly in the following three seasons and played 96 of his total of 134 NHL games, but was also repeatedly found in the roster of the Sharks farm team. In the summer of 1997, the right winger returned to the Dallas Stars, where he again only had a place in the farm team roster.
After a disappointing 1997-98 season moved Tancill to Europe for the Kloten Flyers in the Swiss National League A to play. Further stations in the following years were EV Zug and SC Rapperswil-Jona , before he ended his career after six years in Switzerland in the summer of 2004.
International
Tancill participated with the US national team in the 1996 , 1997 and 2000 World Championships . He won the bronze medal in 1996 after defeating Russia in the game for third place.
