Friedrich August Adolf Schneider

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich August Adolf Schneider (born September 13, 1824 in Dresden , † June 13, 1878 in Glashütte (Saxony) ) was a master watchmaker, entrepreneur and Saxon regional politician.

Life

Friedrich August Adolf Schneider completed an apprenticeship as a watchmaker with Johann Christian Friedrich Gutkaes , a Saxon court watchmaker. At that time Ferdinand Adolph Lange was responsible for training. The contact with the experienced watchmaker turned out to be groundbreaking for Adolf Schneider's professional future. Like Ferdinand Adolph Lange, Adolf Schneider married one of the daughters of his teacher Friedrich Gutkaes. It didn't take long before the family relationship - Schneider and Lange had become brothers-in-law through their marriage - developed into a business relationship.

On December 7th, 1845, FA Lange founded the watch manufacturer " A. Lange, Dresden ", in which Adolf Schneider worked as the first foreman until 1848. The two watchmakers thus laid the foundation for an independent Saxon watch industry. They made a major contribution to the fact that Glashütte still enjoys worldwide fame for the manufacture of high-quality watches to this day.

In 1851, following the advice of his brother-in-law FA Lange, Adolf Schneider founded his own pocket watch manufacture. The pocket watches with lever escapement manufactured by the Schneider company met the high quality requirements of Glashütte production and were exported to America.

When Ferdinand Adolph Lange resigned his office as mayor of Glashütte in 1866 , Adolf Scheider took over the post only a year later.

After his death in 1878 his son Woldemar Schneider continued the pocket watch production.
