Friedrich Birzer

Friedrich Georg Joseph Birzer (born October 21, 1908 in Nuremberg ; † September 18, 1980 in Erlangen ) was a German geologist and professor at the University of Erlangen .

He received his doctorate in Erlangen under Hans Lenk in 1932 (geological investigations between Beilngries and Thalmässing ), where he was assistant to Bruno von Freyberg and from 1939 private lecturer (habilitation 1938, weathering and landscape history of the southern Franconian Jura ). In 1936/37 he received a pedological training from Hermann Stremme in Danzig. During the Second World War he was a military geologist in Northern Norway. In 1945 he became an adjunct professor and in 1966 a regular professor (the first holder of the chair for applied geology in Erlangen). In 1970 he became a full professor. From 1945 to 1977 he was director of the palace gardens in Erlangen.

Birzer dealt with the geology of the southern Franconian Jura, landscape history, the Lias in Franconia and mineral resources in northeast Bavaria and with hydro and engineering geology (soil and rock mechanics), where he was involved in many projects as an expert.

From 1968 he was editor of the geological sheets for Northeast Bavaria.
