Friedrich Cauer (philologist)

Ludwig Eduard Friedrich Cauer (born March 14, 1863 in Breslau ; † May 21, 1932 in Berlin ) was a German classical philologist and ancient historian.

Life

Cauer, the son of the educator Eduard Cauer and stepson of the women's rights activist Minna Cauer , studied classical philology and history at the universities of Berlin , Bonn and Leipzig from Michaelis 1880 to Easter 1884 . On January 26, 1884, he received his doctorate in Berlin with the dissertation De fabulis graecis ad Romam conditam pertinentibus (“About Greek fables on the founding day of Rome”). A year later he passed the first teaching examination for Latin, Greek, history, geography and religion. He completed his probationary year from Easter 1885 at the Friedrichs-Gymnasium in Berlin. In the following years he devoted himself to his habilitation, which he achieved in Tübingen in 1890 . He then worked for three years as a private lecturer in ancient history in Tübingen.

In 1893 Cauer entered the Prussian school service again and worked as a librarian on the side. In 1906 he was promoted to high school professor. His career reached its climax when he was transferred to the Martin Luther Lyceum. Here he was appointed director of studies in 1915 and retired in 1928. In 1918 he was awarded the Cross of Merit for War Aid. From 1919 he was a church elder in the Twelve Apostles congregation .

In addition to monographs such as Did Aristotle Write the Book of the State of Athens? (Stuttgart 1891) and Cicero's political thinking (Berlin 1903), Cauer wrote numerous articles for Pauly's Realencyclopadie of classical antiquity .

His brother Paul Cauer was also a teacher and classical philologist.
