Friedrich Decker (born June 29, 1947 in Ottweiler- Steinbach) is a German politician ( SPD ) and former Lord Mayor of the district town of Neunkirchen .

education and profession

Friedrich Decker grew up in the Steinbach district of Ottweiler and attended elementary and secondary school. In addition to his apprenticeship as a surveying technician, he successfully completed the advanced school in Neunkirchen and completed his engineering studies in the field of surveying technology in Mainz from 1966 to 1969. From 1969 to 1971 he worked as a surveying engineer. From 1971 to 1972 he did his military service with the Bundeswehr with training as a reserve officer. In 1972 Decker began his studies at the University of Kaiserslautern in the field of urban, spatial and environmental planning, which he graduated in 1975 with a degree in engineering.

In 1975, Decker began working for the city administration of the district town of Neunkirchen, became head of the planning office in 1977 and head of the building and planning office in 1983. During this time the great structural change in the city of Neunkirchen took place. After the closure plans and the demolition of the Neunkirchen ironworks, it was necessary to revitalize an industrial wasteland of around 100 hectares, to design a completely new city center, to create commercial areas and to remove industrial contaminants.

In addition to city council, administration, Lord Mayor Peter Neuber (SPD) and Mayor Ewald Groß (CDU), Decker was significantly involved in the development of Neunkirchen from an industrial location to a service center. In 1979 the Blieszentrum was established with various retail outlets and in 1989 the largest inner-city shopping center in Saarland was opened with the establishment of the ECE Saarparkcenter in Neunkirchen.

Friedrich Decker has been a member of the SPD since 1974. In 1988 he was elected mayor by the city council of the district town of Neunkirchen. After Lord Mayor Peter Neuber was appointed as State Secretary in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Finance in 1990, Friedrich Decker was elected by the Neunkirchen City Council as his successor as Lord Mayor.

In the first direct election in Neunkirchen on January 23, 2000, Friedrich Decker prevailed against Karl Albert (CDU, 18.8%) with 79.4% of the vote.

From 1997 to September 30, 2009, Decker was President of the Saarland City and Community Day. Since 1988 he has been a member of the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning.

On September 11, 2008, Friedrich Decker announced that he would not run for a further term in the mayoral election on June 7, 2009 and that he would end his office on September 30, 2009. The previous mayor Jürgen Fried (SPD) was elected as his successor . a. prevailed against Michael Schley (CDU) in the first ballot.

Honors

Friedrich Decker was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit on February 1, 2012 .

Personal

Friedrich Decker is married and has a grown son (Jochen Decker, * 1976). In addition to his interest in history, Decker is a profound expert on the flora and fauna of Saarland and Lorraine.
