Friedrich called Fritz Dircksen (born January 17, 1874 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ), † March 17, 1907 in Cologne ) was a German civil engineer and railway construction official .

Origin and professional career

Fritz Dircksen was the youngest son of the chief railway construction officer Ernst Dircksen , who was particularly active in Berlin (1874–1883, light rail ) and Cologne (1883–1890, Cologne: western railway ring with main , west and south stations, etc.) . According to his father's places of work, he attended schools in Berlin and Cologne before he presumably passed the school-leaving exams at Erfurt, his last place of work. Then Fritz Dircksen began studying civil engineering at the Technical University of Charlottenburg, specializing in railway construction. He passed both the first state examination with subsequent appointment as royal government building supervisor and the second state examination (1900) with subsequent appointment as royal government master builder in railway construction with distinction. The achievements he showed were recognized with awards for study trips. In 1899 he received the Schinkel Prize of the Architects and Engineers Association in Berlin for his design for a central train station in Leipzig .

Immediately after being appointed Royal Government Builder, Dircksen was appointed to the Prussian Ministry of Public Works as an unskilled worker , where he was able to utilize his knowledge of iron constructions , which he had acquired on various study trips ( Switzerland , Italy , Austria , the Balkans , Asia Minor and North America ). In an obituary by his colleague Gottwalt Schaper , he emphasized the scientific importance that Dircksen achieved through his numerous publications and in particular his elaboration of auxiliary values for the design and calculation of iron bridges . This technical work, provided with two ministerial recommendations, was published for the first time in 1904 and printed in extended editions in 1905 and 1908. It appeared again in 1913 in an edition revised by Schaper. Dircksen's academic papers obviously contained further unfinished drafts. In addition to his full-time employment, he was also assistant to Heinrich Müller-Breslau until he moved to Cologne in November 1905 , at his chair at the TH Charlottenburg, a position in which Schaper succeeded him as well as in the ministry.

The transfer from the Ministry's Railway Department in Berlin to the Royal Railway Directorate in Cologne was intended to give Dircksen the opportunity to apply his theoretical knowledge in practice. He was entrusted with the task of developing the designs and taking on the local management of the construction of the Hohenzollern Bridge and the South Bridge under the direction of Fritz Beermann . Only a few months after being transferred to Cologne in 1906, he was appointed railway construction and operations inspector. After his untimely death, Gustav Schimpff continued his work.
