Friedrich Ebrard

Friedrich Ebrard (full: Friedrich August Ebrard; born May 16, 1891 in Basel , † May 19, 1975 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss lawyer and specialist in Roman law .

Ebrard came from an old Huguenot family . In 1917 he received his doctorate at the University of Leipzig with a legal dissertation on the Digest , in 1918 he became a private lecturer there. He has taught as an associate since 1920. Professor at the University of Hamburg until 1934 when he refused to take the official oath of Adolf Hitler . In addition, Roman law as a university subject was attacked by the National Socialists. Previously, in November 1933, he had signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler . He then taught in Switzerland and in 1936 became a professor at the University of Zurich .
