Friedrich Flender came from the Weidenau Flender family in Haardt ; he was the son of the hammer smith Hans Henrich Flender vor der Hardt (1638-1720) and his wife Anna Katarina. Friedrich was married to Katarina Flender (* 1680) since 1701; there are three children from the marriage.

Flender himself was a hammer smith and a shareholder in the Weidenauer trade union under mining law . He was arrested on March 26, 1707 on the orders of Wilhelm Hyazinth, Prince of Orange and Nassau-Siegen, and executed on March 29, 1707 in the Upper Castle of Siegen for refusing to pay taxes. Flender fought against the financial burdens caused by the mismanagement of the Siegen princes, which resulted in protests and tax strikes. Because of his leadership role and his complaint to the Vienna Reichshofrat and Emperor Joseph I , he was arrested and beheaded without a trial. Wilhelm Hyazinth was then deposed on April 20, 1707 on the initiative of Friedrich Wilhelm I Adolf by an imperial commission appointed by Emperor Joseph I himself. Friedrich Flender's family was awarded an honorary debt with confirmation of Friedrich Flender's innocence and a solemn funeral.

Friedrich Flender is considered one of the most important personalities in the history of the city of Siegen. In 2008 he was honored with a plaque in the Upper Castle in Siegen.
