Friedrich Geiger (vehicle designer)

Friedrich Geiger (born November 24, 1907 in Süßen ; † June 13, 1996 in Bad Überkingen ) was a German automobile designer and long-time chief designer at Mercedes-Benz , for whom he developed the 300 SL gullwing sports car, among other things .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a wheelwright with a master craftsman's examination (1931), he completed his studies in vehicle construction (1930–1933) at the engineering school in Meissen . There he married Johanna Wolf in 1936.

On April 10, 1933, Geiger joined the special vehicle construction department at Daimler-Benz AG at the Sindelfingen plant, which was headed by Hermann Ahrens. Here he developed the design of the body of the special roadster of the Mercedes-Benz 500K . He also created the armored sedans of the Großer Mercedes ( W 07 and W 150 ) and 540 K types .

Due to the restructuring of the company after the war , he left Mercedes for two years in 1948. On his return he initially held the post of test designer, and some time later he was promoted to chief designer. In the period that followed, he developed the 300SL gullwing and practically all Mercedes models of the subsequent period up to the W 116 in 1972. On December 31, 1973, Friedrich Geiger retired. His post was filled by Bruno Sacco .
