Friedrich Grade

Friedrich Grade (born March 29, 1916 in Büdelsdorf ) is a German engineer and naval officer.

Life

During the Second World War he belonged to the Navy and was chief engineer (LI) of the submarines U 96 and U 183 .

Just today is the last surviving eyewitness of the patrols of the submarine. In 2017 he published his previously unknown diaries for the first time, which were created during operations on the U 96. Grade achieved nationwide fame in 2018 when his story was picked up in the media as part of the remake of Das Boot .

After his missions on the U 96 , he completed two more patrols on the U 183 and then trained submarine crews as a technical instructor for the submarine training flotilla until the end of the war. In 1958 Grade was accepted into the newly founded German Navy to lead the development of new submarines. In 1970, shortly before his retirement, he worked on the revision of Lothar-Günther Buchheim's novel Das Boot .
