Friedrich Hammer (sculptor)
Friedrich Hammer , also Fritz Hammer and ( French ) Frédéric Hammer , was a German post-Gothic sculptor and stonemason who worked in the city of Hagenau in Alsace from 1519–1544 , which was then at its peak.
Friedrich Hammer was the son of the sculptor Hans Meiger von Werde , called Hans Hammer (or Hammerer), who worked in neighboring Strasbourg . His earliest documented works include the keystones and other reliefs in the sacristy of the pilgrimage church of Marienthal Abbey . The twelve meter high sacrament house in the church of St. George dates from 1523 . The city history museum Musée historique de Haguenau preserves a self-portrait (1542) of the artist, which comes from the former town hall, which was demolished in 1784. All of these and the other surviving works are carved from sandstone .
