Friedrich Heinrich Wilhelm Lange

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Heinrich Wilhelm Lange (* 1779 ; † October 8, 1854 in Potsdam ) was a German teacher ( classical philologist ) and translator of Herodotus .

Friedrich Lange studied in Halle and Jena and was from 1808 private tutor to the Count of Prittwitz at Gut Quilitz near Neuhardenberg and from 1809 or 1810 teacher at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin. He later taught at the Friedrichwerder Gymnasium in Berlin. In the Wars of Liberation he took an active part as part of Justus Gruner 's network, which scouted Napoleonic troop movements (therefore he was arrested with Gruner in Prague), and he was involved in the organization of the Lützow Freikorps . After the war he was a school councilor in Koblenz and from 1833 to 1850 a provincial school councilor in Berlin. He belonged to Friedrich Ludwig Jahn's circle of friends .

Herodotus translations by Johann Eustachius Goldhagen and Johann Friedrich Degen had previously appeared in the 18th century . Lange's Herodotus translation of 1811/12 was influenced by the Homer translations by Johann Heinrich Voss , which adhered closely to the linguistic style of the original and used an archaic style. Behind his translation there was also the model of the Persian Wars described by Herodotus for the German Wars of Liberation. The translation has been reprinted many times. Even Walter Marg chose it as the starting point of his own Herodotus translation in the library of the ancient world .
