Friedrich appears repeatedly in documents in the years 1453 to 1472. He was the first-born son of Wilhelm II von Retersbeck and Yolenta de Lonchis and married to Margaretha von Horrich. With her he had two children, Wilhelm IV and Margaretha. A notarial instrument from 1514 refers to another possible daughter of Friedrich, a premonstratensic nun with the name Maria. Margarethe married Johan Krümmel von Eynatten zu Flamersheim.

From Friedrich the family called themselves exclusively von or van Schaesberg. However, references to the connection to Retersbeck remain in the Schaesberg coat of arms to this day. This means that in addition to the blue tournament collar with three red balls underneath in a silver field in the coat of arms field one and four, the Retersbeck's insignia, the red deer antlers with four ends in gold, are placed in the second and third field.
