Aichryson tortuosum is a species of the genus Aichryson in the thick-leaf family(Crassulaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

Aichryson tortuosum grows as a perennial , densely branched, fluffy small shrub and reaches stature heights of up to 15 centimeters. The hairy, often bare below shoots have a diameter of about 5 millimeters. The woody, twisted branches spread widely. Their seated, obovate, rounded, densely hairy, sticky, resinous, scented, often purple-tinged leaves are 10 to 12 millimeters long, 4 to 6 millimeters wide and 2 to 3 millimeters thick. The leaf blade is widest above the center .

Generative characteristics

The little flowered inflorescence appears on short, loosely leafed shoots. The seven to eight-fold flowers are on a stalk up to 7 millimeters long and have a diameter of 9 to 12 millimeters. Their sepals are hairy glandular. The deep yellow, elliptical, pointed, awn-tipped petals are 5 to 6 millimeters long. They are suddenly bent back at the tip and often finely lashed at the edge.

Systematics and distribution

Aichryson tortuosum is common in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura at heights of up to 700 meters.

The first description as Sempervivum tortuosum by William Aiton was published in 1789. Philip Barker Webb and Sabin Berthelot put the species in the genus Aichryson in 1840 .

Further nomenclature synonymous are Aeonium tortuosum (Aiton) A. Berger (1930) and Macrobia tortuosa (Aiton) G. Kunkel (1977). There are also other synonyms.
