Aichryson is a genus of plants from the family of thick leaf plants (Crassulaceae). The botanical name goes back to an old Greek name used by Pedanios Dioscurides for Aeonium arboreum . It is derived from the words "aei" forever and "chrysos" for gold .

description

Vegetative characteristics

The species of the genus Aichryson are either one to three-year-old, single or sparsely to densely branched monocarpic herbaceous plants (Section Aichryson ) or bare, almost bare or densely hairy, arched, perennial shrubs (Section Macrobia ). The densely hairy or bald shoots reach a diameter between 3 and 12 millimeters at the base. They are ascending or spreading, forked or widely spread. The branches are occasionally slightly woody. The simple, alternate, often rosette-shaped leaves near the shoot tips are sessile or clearly stalked. Their egg-shaped, obovate, trowel-shaped, rhombic or trowel-shaped leaf blades are more or less clearly succulent . The spreader tip is blunt, rounded or somewhat pointed, wedge-shaped, narrowed or truncated. The leaf margin, which is often purple in color, is whole or slightly notched. He is bald, almost bald or clearly hairy . It is seldom glandular and sticky.

The roots are fibrous.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence at the tip of the shoots is loose and occasionally a little even . The thread-thin flower stalk is 2 to 20 millimeters long. The 6 to 12-fold flowers reach a diameter between 6 and 16 millimeters. Their bald or hairy sepals are fleshy and fused at the base. The pale or deep yellow petals are lanceolate, elliptical or egg-shaped and occasionally have an attached tip.

The thread-like stamens are free. The cylindrical anthers are yellowish. There are twice as many stamens as there are petals. The elongated nectar flakes have a length of 0.5 to 0.9 millimeters and a width of 0.4 to 0.6 millimeters. They are 2 to 5 columns and wedge-shaped. The yellowish carpels are sunk into the base of the flower base . They are bald or have some glandular hair. There are as many carpels as there are petals.

Seeds

The brownish seeds are warty to ribbed.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Aichryson is common in the Canary Islands , Madeira and the Azorean island of Santa Maria . It has run wild in Portugal .

Aichryson laxum in Tenerife

According to Reto Nyffeler, the genus Aichryson includes the following species:

and the hybrid Aichryson × aizoides (Lam.) ECNelson .
